About the lecture
Granada could host one of the most unique and advanced nuclear physics facilities in the world. The ultimate aim of this facility, IFMIF-DONES, is to analyse how materials behave under extreme neutron irradiation. These experiments should make it possible to find new or better structural materials for the ITER fusion reactor. The conditions of the ITER experiment in terms of temperature and particle irradiation, including neutrons, will be unique and far more extreme than those of any experiment carried out to date. ITER aims to demonstrate that commercial electricity can be produced through nuclear fusion.
This talk will describe these projects, with special attention to IFMIF-DONES, which has required (and will still require) unique technological developments in different fields, especially particle accelerators and neutron production.
