About the lecture

Disc galaxies, which show us their fundamental plane of symmetry, contain a beautiful signature that characterises them: spiral arms. However, when we observe the disc edge-on we see ripples in different components of the disc —gas, young stars and old stars— as well as a large vertical deviation of the outer parts of the disc, forming a kind of S or integral sign. Gaia's data releases have given new impetus to these studies, and new discoveries show us a puzzle whose possible solutions we will discuss in this talk.
